If you live in an area where hailstones are rampant, you may be wondering to what extent they can destroy your roof. Well, the extent of destruction depends on the size of the hailstones. If they are 4 inches or larger in size, the structural damage will be severe. But, a small hailstone with a diameter of 1 inch or less will cause minimal damage. That said, how will you be able to know that the hailstones have destroyed your roofing structure? Here are the telltale signs to look out for when inspecting the roofing system after a hailstorm.

Water Leaks

This is the most obvious sign that hailstones have destroyed the roof. The hailstones flake the granules on the shingles off. This leaves the roof structure exposed, allowing water to find its way through it. As a result, moisture will build up in the decking beneath. This is a serious issue that warrants immediate attention. Otherwise, it can result in severe problems, such as damaged ceiling lights. Also, mold can develop on the rooftop and erode and weaken the structure. Mold can also cause serious health issues, such as bronchitis, asthma, and diarrhea.

Dents In The Shingles

Hailstones bounce off the shingles and cause dents. If the hailstones are large, the dents will assume a round shape. In the case where there are heavy storms that involve hail, you may notice that the shingles appear shiny. This is because their granules detach. That said, you should contact a roofing contractor to come and fix it as soon as you notice this sign. This will ensure that the dents do not develop into serious issues that can warrant a roof replacement.

Granules In Downspouts Or Gutters

When the granules fall off the shingles, they are washed down into the gutters or downspouts. So, if you notice granules in the gutters, this is proof of hail damage. You should hire someone to inspect the gutters thoroughly after a hailstorm.  Also, it would be best to avoid DIY inspection at all costs because some issues are not immediately obvious, and you may be unable to spot them. Besides, this process can be risky, thus, you should allow an experienced contractor to perform the inspection.

After a hailstorm, you should arrange for an emergency roof inspection. This is an important exercise that will allow you to assess the extent of the damage to the structure. The contractor will repair the minor issues before they develop into bigger issues. But, if the damage is severe, you may have no option but to replace the entire structure.
